Middle Tennessee State University's recording industry majors focus their efforts on breaking into the competitive music industry in Nashville, Tennessee. They juggle studio time, live shows, recording sessions, and student life. Jimmy Lad and Lydia MacDavid, commercial songwriter seniors at MTSU, discuss writing habits, lyrical inspiration, and the opportunities they have taken to gain recognition and boost their developing musical careers.

"If I thought of it, and I know I have to write down, I’m going to write it down right then and there. That’s why, you know, people or even yourself will see me on my phone all the time."

"Let’s say if I had a girlfriend, and she like broke up with me. Instantly, I’ll write about it, cause then I don’t want it to just be gone out of my mind forever and forgotten. So, I’ll just write about it — like the situation or how I’m feeling —  and I’ll put it into a song."

"There’s really no type of process of making a hit song. It’s either it’s good or not, and if people like it."

"Because if other people like it, a lot of people are going to like it including yourself."

"For me to get my music career going, I’ve done songwriting practicum, which has been really helpful because I’ve taken the songs that I did at the studio, and I put them into an EP album."

"All you can do for songwriting is just to get your music out there, to play live shows, to have your music on Spotify and on music platforms cause that’s the only way you’re going to stand out in this business."
